Historical or Biographical Note
Richard Overton Cannon was a 1943 graduate of the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. He served his residency at Vanderbilt and became chief resident in Obstetrics/Gynecology. Dr. Cannon served as Director of Vanderbilt Hospital from 1951 to 1967, and as Dean of the Division of Allied Health Professions until 1972.
Dr. Cannon served in the Army during the Korean War and also served for many years in the Tennessee National Guard. He was elected to AOA while in medical school and was very active in the Nashville Academy of Medicine, the Tennessee Medical Association, AMA, AAMC, and the Tennessee Hospital Association throughout his career. He served as Director of the Tennessee Mid-South Regional Medical Program from 1973 until 1983.
