Historical or Biographical Note
Dr. Harrison H. Shoulders, Sr., served as the 100th president of the American Medical Association in 1946. He graduated from the University of Nashville Medical School and interned at St. Thomas Hospital in Nashville. Shoulders served several surgical residencies at prestigious New York hospitals before serving as an Army surgeon during World War I. Upon his return to Nashville, Shoulders began a private surgical practice, which he held for 40 years. Dr. Shoulders retired in 1956 and passed away in 1963.
