Historical or Biographical Note
Dr. Arthur W. Douthwaite was born December 24, 1848, in Sheffield, England. He spent a great deal of his life as a medical missionary associated with the China Inland Mission. He received medical training at the London Hospital Medical School in 1873 and later at the Medical Department of Vanderbilt University, where he received his M.D. in 1885, Douthwaite served at a hospital in Chefoo, China, and was instrumental in the founding of a medical school that year. He died of dysentery at Chefoo on October 5, 1899.
