Biographical / Historical
Dr. Clara C. Plimpton McGavock was born September 29, 1840 in Southbridge, Massachusetts. She received her medical training at the New York Medical College for Women, graduating in 1874. She came to Nashville in 1878 to practice medicine and maintained an office on Church Street in downtown Nashville for several years before marrying Frank McGavock in 1896. Mr. McGavock was a prominent landowner, stock farmer and horse breeder. Retiring from active practice, she assisted her husband in the operation of the Two Rivers McGavock estate until her untimely death in on January 24, 1904.
