Biographical / Historical

Philip Walker is the director of the Annette and Irwin Eskind Family Biomedical Library and Learning Center at Vanderbilt University, being appointed in July 2018. Prior to coming to Vanderbilt in 2012, he was at the Howard-Tilton Memorial Library and Rudolph Matas Library of the Health Sciences at Tulane University in New Orleans, and the Texas Medical Center Library in Houston. He also worked with Meharry Medical College Library concurrent with his time at Vanderbilt. A native of New Orleans, Mr. Walker earned a master’s in library and information science from Louisiana State University in 2005 and a master’s in health informatics from the University of Missouri in 2014. He is currently (2024) enrolled in the doctorate in health informatics program at the University of Texas Health Science Center at Houston. Philip is an adjunct faculty member of the Vanderbilt School of Nursing with research interests related to the information needs and information seeking behavior of the health sciences community, biomedical and health informatics, knowledge translation, evidence-based practice, and information ecology. Philip has authored or co-authored several papers, conference presentations, and a book chapter. He is a member of the Southern and South-Central Chapters of the Medical Library Association, the American Medical Informatics Association and the American Nursing Informatics Association. In 2022 he was invited to serve as a member of the Board of Regents of the National Library of Medicine with the term ending in August 2026.
