Biographical / Historical
Dr. Robert Deaver Collins was a pathologist, teacher, and author. His research interests included diseases of the lymph nodes and bone marrow and the specialty of hematopathology. He is the author of a biography of Ernest W. Goodpasture published by Hillsboro Press, 2002, and a second book on the History of VUMC, entitled Ahmic Lake Connections published in 2004.
Dr. Collins obtained his B.S. (1948) and his M.D. (1951) from Vanderbilt. He then received a fellowship in microbiology at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Dr. Collins returned to Vanderbilt in 1957 as an instructor in pathology and soon became an assistant professor of pathology in 1959. He attained the rank of professor in 1968 and was elevated to the rank of emeritus professor in 2013. He also served as Assistant Dean of Medical Students from 1964-1967. He was the recipient of numerous awards including the Harvie Branscomb Distinguished Professor Award and the Grant Liddle Award for Excellence in Research.
He died in Nashville on November 28, 2013.
