Biographical / Historical
Dr. William Hawkins Edwards was native of Nashville, a WWII Navy veteran, and vascular surgeon. He completed his B.A. and M.D. degrees from Vanderbilt University in 1949 and 1953 respectively. He completed surgical residencies at Vanderbilt and UCLA and a Vascular Fellowship at Baylor Univeristy in Houston. He returned to Nashville in 1960 and practiced with his father and brother in law at the Edwards-Eve Clinic. He also served at Vanderbilt as a Clinical Instructor of Surgery. In 1969 he and Dr. Andrew Dale started the St. Thomas Vascular Fellowship. This fellowship was later moved to Vanderbilt where it was known as the Vanderbilt-St. Thomas Vascular Fellowship. In 1991 he moved his practice to Vanderbilt and served as Chief of the Division of Vascular Surgery. He was later named the H. William Scott Jr. Professor of Surgery, Emeritus at VUMC in 1995. He died at his home in Nashville on October 23, 2019.
