Abstract

Biographical file includes a curriculum vitae from 1999. This file also includes many photographs of Dr. Bender and other prominent surgeons. Included are reprints and several newspaper clippings about Dr. Bender, and a program from a Symposium Weekend held in his honor at Vanderbilt in September 1996.

Historical or Biographical Note

Dr. Bender received his M.D. from Baylor University College of Medicine in 1959. After his residency at Johns Hopkins and a Fellowship at the National Heart Institue he returned to Hopkins as faculty. He came to Vanderbilt in 1971 as Professor of Surgery, Chair of the Dept. of Cardiac and Thoracic Surgery. In 1996, in honor of his 25 years at Vanderbilt, a symposium was held in his honor. Dr. Bender was elected President of the American College of Surgeons in 1999.
