Biographical / Historical
Dr. Clifton was born in Fayetteville, NC on Sept 18, 1923 and he earned his B.A. degree in 1944 and M.D. degree in 1947 at Vanderbilt University. He did his internship, residency from Iowa and assumed leadership of the UI Department of Internal Medicine and later was appointed as the chief of the division of Gastroentrology in 1955. In 1970's he conceived of a center for digestive diseases and in 1985 opened an UI Center for Digestive Disease which was later dedicated under his name in 1991.
