Historical or Biographical Note
Dr. Hayes received his Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin and his M.D. from the University of Virginia. Specializing in toxicology, he was especially interested in the effects of pesticides for mammals. Hayes came to Vanderbilt in 1968 and continued to lecture there until he became to ill to continue, eventually achieving the status of Professor Emeritus. Dr. Hayes was involved in many societies, committees, and panels. He was a charter member of the Society of Toxicology and also served on the Medical Center Library Committee at Vanderbilt. During his career he had numerous publications, including two books on pesticides and toxicology. Dr. Hayes also became involved in a struggle with the EPA about dangerous tests they planned to do on Tennessee inmates. He believed that products that would one day be released to the public needed to be tested on humans, but that known dangerous elements should not be used on humans. His actions blocked that EPA proposal. He passed away in 1993.
