Biographical / Historical
Balser was born in 1962, in Indianapolis, IN, and graduated from Vanderbilt University in 1990 with M. D. and Ph.D. in Pharmacology. He joined as a faculty in 1995 with John Hopkins where he was trained as a resident and fellow anesthesiology and critical care medicine.He returned to Vanderbilt as a dean for Physician Scientists in 1998 and later in 2001 was appointed the James Tayloe Gwathmey Professor and chair of Anesthesiology. In 2009, he was named Dean of the School of Medicine and Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs. In 2016, with the separation of the Medical Center from the University Dr. Balser was named President and CEO of VUMC and Dean of the School of Medicine, a position which he presently serves (in 2024).
