Historical or Biographical Note

Humphrey Howell Bate, Sr. was born February 1, 1844 at the Old Bate Home Place, Castalian Springs, Sumner County, Tennessee. He died June 8, 1911 and is buried in the Gallatin Cemetery. He was a Civil War veteran. In 1866, Humphrey entered the Medical Department of the University of Nashville and graduated in 1868. He practiced medicine in Sumner County.
