Historical or Biographical Note
Naji Abumrad, MD, received his BS and MD from the American University of Beirut, Lebanon. He performed his surgical residency at State University of New York in Syracuse, becoming chief resident in 1975-76, and then joining the faculty as Assistant Professor of Surgery. Vanderbilt recruited him in 1979 as an Assistant Professor of Surgery and Medicine. In 1983, he became director of the SR Light Surgical Research Laboratories and the Paul W. Sanger Professor of Experimental Surgery. Dr. Abumrad's research focuses on metabolic problems in surgery, particularly those of the endocrine system.
