Historical or Biographical Note
Professor of Surgery and Cell and Developmental Biology, Emeritus, VUSM. Born in Clarksville, TN, Dr. Adkins graduated from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 1958, and joined the faculty in 1966. He was a colonel in the Tennessee Air National Guard and served on active duty in the Persian Gulf War. Past president of the Nashville Academy of Medicine, he was also a member of the Tennessee Medical Association, the American Association of Clinical Anatomists, the Nashville Surgical Association, and the William H. Scott, Jr. Society. Dr.Adkins was also a recipient of the Distinguished Service Award from the Southeastern Surgical Congress. He co-authored a book with H. William Scott entitled, The Surgical Care of the Elderly.
