File contains a transcription of a letter from Thomas Van Zandt to Mr. Adolph B. Hill, Jr. of the Hill Hentschel Company, St. Louis, outlining his service in the 300th General Hospial. File also contains a CD of photographic images of Capt. Van Zandt and the 300th General Hospital Unit.

Historical or Biographical Note

Thomas Kelly Van Zandt III was born Jan 10 1909 the son of Dr. Thomas Kelly Van Zandt, Jr. of Louisville Kentucky, and Mary Gibson Morgan Van Zandt of Nashville. He was raised in Louisville and was a member of the Vanderbilt 300th General Hospital during World War II. With a commission of 2nd lieutenant, he performed administrative duties for the unit. In 1944, he was promoted captain and served as a supply officer and later a post exchange officer. Following the war and discharge from the Army, he worked for the Hill-Hentschel Company in St. Louis and later New Orleans. He retired in 1971 after working 25 years with the company. He died December 6, 1976 in New Orleans. His maternal uncle was Dr. Hugh Jackson Morgan who was Professor of Medicine at Vanderbilt and served as brigadier general during the war in the role of Chief Medical Consultant to the Surgeon General.
