Biographical/Historical

John Gilbert Rogers was born in Dickson County, Tennessee in 1839 the son of Joel Rogers and Anne Mariah Williams Rogers. He enrolled in the Medical Department of the University of Nashville for the 1860 -1861 term. During the Civil War, he enlisted in the Confederate Army on May 10, 1861, at Nashville, Tennessee and served in the 11th Tennessee Infantry Regiment and fought in battles including Chickamauga, Missionary Ridge, and the Atlanta campaign where he was wounded in July 1864. After the war, he married Indiana Cocke and resided near Clarksville, Tennessee in present day Cunningham. In 1874, he resumed his medical education, enrolling in the joint medical departments of the University of Nashville and Vanderbilt University. and graduated in 1875 which was the first graduating class at Vanderbilt University. He practiced medicine for over forty years in the Cunningham, Tennessee area and died in July 1917.
