Historical or Biographical Note
Dr. Leroy was born in Chelsea, MA. He received his M.D. degree from the Medico-Chirugical College at Philadelphia in 1896 and an A. B. from the University of Nashville in 1900. In addition to his appointment at Vanderbilt, he served as a bacteriologist for the State of Tennessee in 1897, and pathologist for the Nashville City Hospital and St. Thomas Hospital. He later moved to Memphis, where he served on the faculty of both the College of Physicians and Surgeons of Memphis and the University of Tennessee. He was chief of staff of the Memphis Hospital, and was on the staff of numerous other hospitals and boards. Well regarded in his profession, he had an addtional interest in speedboat racing, and in July 1929 broke the long held recored of the steamboat Robert E. Lee in making the run from New Orleans to St Louis in 87 hours 31 minutes.
