Historical or Biographical Note
Emmett B. Fields served as the first and only president of Vanderbilt University. He earned his Doctorate in American History at Vanderbilt and was appointed associate dean of its College of Arts and Science in 1957, serving as dean from 1960 to 1969. Fields returned to the university as president in 1977, a new position designed to relieve some of the duties of Chancellor Alexander Heard. Fields held the position until 1982, when Heard retired and Vanderbilt dropped the title 'president' from its organizational chart, restoring the chancellor as the clear chief executive.
