Historical or Biographical Note
Miriam McGaw Cowden served on the Vanderbilt Borad of Trust for more than 30 years. She graduated from Vanderbilt with a B.A. in 1941 and was first elected to the board in 1974. Cowden served as its secretary from 1980 until 1991. In 2003, she was designated a Trustee Emerita. Cowden also chaired the Student Affairs Committee and received the Mary Jane Werthan Award in 1991 for outstanding contributions to women at Vanderbilt.
