Historical or Biographical Note
Dr. Robert Smith Sanders was a native of Tullahoma, Tennessee. He received his undergraduate and medical degrees at Vanderbilt University, where he also completed a residency in pediatrics. Sanders practiced medicine in Murfreesboro, Tennessee, where he also served as director of the Rutherford County Health Department. A child-safety pioneer, Sanders was instrumental in the passage of child-restraint legislation in 1977 in Tennessee, the first of its kind in the country. Sanders passed away in 2006.
