Historical or Biographical Note
Louise Allen Beard received her B.A. and M.A. from Vanderbilt University. Before applying to Medical School she taught courses in the Biology Dept. at Vanderbilt and worked at the Marine Biological Laboratory at Woods Hole, Massachusetts. She applied for admission to Vanderbilt Medical School and was admitted in September 1925. Louise Allen was one of the first women admitted to Vanderbilt Medical School. She graduated M.D. in 1929. While in Medical School she married fellow classmate Joseph Beard.
