Historical or Biographical Note
Dr. Charles Briggs graduated from the University of Nashville's medical department in 1875. He then left Nashville for Philadelphia to study surgery with Dr. S.W. Gross, returning in 1877. Dr. Briggs then held many prominent positions in the University of Nashville and Vanderbilt medical departments and also served as editor of the Nashville Journal of Medicine and Surgery. He and his father established the Briggs Infirmary in 1891. Dr. Briggs died of influenza in 1920.
Language of Materials
This file includes an original photograph and an obituary. It also includes a typed reproduction of a letter by a Mr. Briggs written to a Mr. Cross in 1842, concerning the need for a medical school in Nashville. In addition, the file contains reprints of census records containing Dr. Briggs as well as a reprint of his death certificate.
