Historical or Biographical Note
Dr. Bowling was a physician, teacher, author, editor and orator. He graduated from Daniel Drake's Medical School in Cincinati in 1836, and practiced medicine in Logan County, Kentucky, building up a fine reputation there and in the bordering state of Tennessee. In 1851, Dr. Bowling moved to Nashville to become Professor of Medicine at the University of Nashville. He also started The "Nashville Journal of Medicine and Surgery," a journal of good reputation that continued until 1920. Bowling served as Vice President and later President of the American Medical Association, as well as president of the Medical Editors Association. Dr. Bowling died in his sleep at Monteagle in 1885.
