Historical or Biographical Note

A native of Wisconsin, Lester J. Tepley (1920-1993) was a biochemist and nutritionist. He received his Ph.D. in Biochemistry and Nutrition from the University of Wisconsin-Madison in 1945. He served as a Nutritionist and Biochemist for the US Public Health Service from 1945-1946. Then he worked as a Research Associate for the Chemistry Department at Columbia University from 1946-1948. He then became a Research Associate at the Wisconsin-Madison Enzyme Institute from 1948-1951. Then he served as Director of the Laboratory Project at Wisconsin-Madison from 1951-1960. He also worked as a Nutritionist for the Nutrition Survey (UN) in Ethiopia in 1958. He then became the Senior Nutritionist for the Office of the Executive Director of the United Nations (UNICEF) starting in 1960 and retiring in 1982. Dr. Tepley died in Larchmont, New York on November 12, 1993.
