Historical or Biographical Note

Harry Sandberg Shelley (1901-1991) was a surgeon, urologist, Colonel, and medical historian. He was considered to be an authority on the history of urology. He received his M.D. from the University of Maryland in 1931. He had a private practice from 1935-1941. During World War II he was a Colonel and Chief of Surgery for the U.S. Army's 101st Evacuation Hospital from 1941-1945. He was the Chief of Urology at the V.A. Hospital (Nashville) from 1945-1966. He also served as a Clinical Professor of Urology at Vanderbilt University's School of Medicine from 1946-1966. Later he became the Honorary Curator of the History of Medicine Collection at the Vanderbilt Medical Center Library from 1967-1991. He ddied in Nashville on April 20, 1991.
