Collection Scope and Content Summary
Personal papers of pathologist, Vanderbilt alum and Vanderbilt professor John L. Shapiro. The collection consists of notebooks containing material (case histories) from Clinico-Pathology conferences (CPC) at VUMC, some with Shapiro's handwritten notes. The CPCs were one of Dr. Shapiro's major instructional techniques. The cases usually precede the conference dates by three to fifteen years. These dates are for the conferences.

Historical or Biographical Note
John L. Shapiro (1915-1983) was a pathologist and professor. He was a successor to Dr. Ernest W. Goodpasture as chairman of the Department of Pathology at Vanderbilt, and he helped establish one of the first diagnostic cytopathology laboratories in the South. He received his M.D. from Vanderbilt University's School of Medicine in 1941. Then he worked as a House Officer in Surgery at the Western Reserve University Hospital from 1941-42 and 1946-47. During World War II, he was a Captain, and Battalion Surgeon in the U.S. Army from 1942-45. He returned to Vanderbilt in 1948 as a Resident in Pathology and eventually became a Professor and Chairman (1956-71) of the Department of Pathology. He stayed at Vanderbilt until his retirement in 1980 when he was awarded the title of Professor Emeritus. Dr. Shapiro died in Nashvlle on July 15, 1983.
