Historical or Biographical Note

Dr. William D. Robinson (1911-1988) was a professor and nutritionist who conducted research in Vitamin B complex; nutrition demographics; protein nutrition in disease; arthritis and rheumatism; and purine metabolism and gout. He received his M.D. from the University of Michigan in 1934. Robinson was a Rockefeller Foundation Fellow at Vanderbilt from 1940-1941 and from 1943-1944 served as an instructor and director of the Investigative Section of the TN-Vanderbilt Nutrition Project from 1943-1944. He returned to the University of Michigan as a Professor of Internal Medicine in 1944. From 1944-1953, Robinson was head of the Arthritis Research Unit at the Rackham School of Graduate Studies at Michigan. Robinson served as president of the American Rheumatism Association from 1956-57, and also as Professor of Chemistry at Michigan in 1958. He died in Ann Arbor, Michigan on September 11, 1988.
