Historical or Biographical Note
Henry Pancoast Pendergrass, M.D., M.P.H., diagnostic radiologist, and educator was son of radiologist Eugene P. Pendergrass. He was born January 25, 1925 and received his B.A. from Princeton University in 1948 and his M.D. from the University of Pennsylvania in 1952. He received his residency training at the University of Pennsylvania Hospital and was a junior member of the radiology staff at Massachusetts General Hospital and a teaching fellow at Harvard. In 1959, Dr. Pendergrass served in a N.I.H. sponsored neuro-radiology fellowship at Queen Square and the Institute of Neurology in London. He returned to Harvard and Massachusetts General Hospital in 1961, where he established and served as the director of the Department of Emergency Radiology Unit. While at Harvard, Dr. Pendergrass earned a master's degree in public health. He arrived at Vanderbilt in 1976 as professor and made several clinical and academic contributions to the Department of Radiology and Radiological Sciences. Dr. Pendergrass' major areas of research include contrast media reactions, radionuclide bone scanning, and the efficacy of RN and CT studies. He was awarded emeritus faculty status in July 1995. He died in Bryn Mawr, Pennsylvania on September 21, 2008.
