Historical or Biographical Note
Bernard Oser (1899-1995) was a biochemist, nutrition and food scientist. He was author of Hawk's Physiological Chemistry. He worked on methods of biological and chemical assay of vitamins, proteins and other nutrients; the fortification, stabilization and physiological availability of vitamins in pharmaceutical products and fortified foods; toxicology and safety evaluation of food additives, drugs, pesticides and related chemicals; and on the scientific aspects of food laws and regulations
He received his Ph.D. from Fordham University in 1927. He was an Assistant in Physiological Chemistry at Jefferson Medical College from 1920-1921. Then he worked as a Biochemist at Philadelphia General Hospital from 1922-1926. He then went from Assistant Director to Vice President at Food Research Labs, Inc. [now FDRL] during the time period from 1926-1957. Then he started as Director and eventually became President of the Chemistry Board from 1959-1974. He also served as an Adjunct Professor at the Columbia University Institute of Nutrition Sciences from 1959-1971. Later he founded of Bernard L. Oser Associates, 1974-1994. He died in Englewood, New Jersey on January, 21, 1995.
