Research material and first draft of an unpublished manuscript on the history of scurvy. Adelia Beeuwkes was a dietitian, teacher, and author of books on dietetics and the history of nutrition. She was a professor at the University of Michigan from 1940-1966. Scurvy Project materials include: note cards, manuscripts, source materials, and correspondence. Collection also contains other correspondence, biographical materials, manuscripts, reprints, and brochures.

Historical or Biographical Note

Adelia Beeuwkes (1910-1966) was a dietitian, teacher, and writer on clinical dietetics and biography. She was professor of nutrition in the school of public health at the University of Michigan from 1940-1966. Her academic training was in the field of dietetics. She studied with Mary Swartz Rose and Dr. Henry C. Sherman at Columbia University. Miss Beeuwkes was known for her public speaking ability and taught at the University of Michigan her entire career. In 1961-1962 she was elected President of the American Dietetic Association. She was also a member of the International Interim Committee for the Third International Congress of Dietetics. She served as an advisor to the U.S. Department of Agriculture on Food and Standards from 1963-1964. Miss Beeuwkes was very interested in the history of nutrition and compiled extensive research material for a book on the history of scurvy. Her untimely death at age 56 prevented her completion of this project.
