Historical or Biographical Note

Lubomir S. Hnilica (1929-1986) was a biochemist, investigator, author, and professor. He was a leading authority on the effects of chemical carcinogens on nuclear proteins, and he did research on histones and interaction of heavy metals with chromosomal molecules.

Lubomir Hnilica received his PhD from Masaryk University in Brno in 1952. He then worked as a biochemist at the National Cancer Institute in Bratislava from 1957-1960. In 1960 he was a WHO Research Fellow at the Chester Beatty Institute in London. Then he came to the United States where he was a professor of biochemistry at Baylor University College of Medicine (1961-1963) and then at the University of Texas (1963-1975). Then he became the Mary Geddes Stahlman Professor of Cancer Research at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine from 1975-1986. He was also the Associate Director of Research at the Vanderbilt Cancer Research and Treatment Center from 1977-1986.
