Kampmeier's Vanderbilt School of Medicine Story in Pictures Collection
Scope and Contents
The collection is a useful resource for photographs and images illustrating the history and development of Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and Hospital. Arranged chronologically, the book is divided into five chapters which cover the origins and distinct eras of its history. Included in the pictorial narrative are images depicting the College of Medicine of the University of Nashville that began in 1851, the period from 1874-1895 where the University of Nashville and Vanderbilt shared medical departments, the interim period of 1895-1925 when the campus of the medical school was located in downtown Nashville, and 1925 to 1963 when the medical school was reorganized and relocated to be on the campus of Vanderbilt University.

Biographical / Historical
Dr. Rudolph H. Kampmeier, who had been associated with the School of Medicine since his appointment as an assistant professor of medicine by Dr. Hugh J. Morgan in 1936, was asked by Vice Chancellor for Health Affairs, Dr. Roscoe R. Robinson to prepare a pictorial history. A gifted clinician, writer, editor, and scholar, he had authored numerous publications including a history of the Department of Medicine at Vanderbilt entitled Recollections: The Department of Medicine published in 1980. He was assisted in the task by Mary H. Teloh, Special Collections Librarian, and Robert “Bobby” Vantrease, former director of the Department of Medical Illustration.

Collection of photographs used in the publication: Vanderbilt University School of Medicine, The Story in Picutures from its Beginning to 1963 by R. H. Kampmeier, B.A., M.D., M.A.C.P., F.R.C.P.(L), Professor of Medicine Emeritus With the Assistance of Mary Teloh, M.A., Special Collections Librarian, Medical Center Library Archivist Robert M. Vantrease, Past Director of Medical Illustration Artist William J. Darby, M.D. Ph.D. Professor of Biochemistry, Emeritus Consultant. Vanderbilt Univeristy Medical Center, 1990. The images in the collection are arranged in the order as they appear in the book, and follow the same numbering scheme. Collection contains printed copies of the photographs and a copy of the book. The photographs and book have been scanned and are availible in digital format as well.

Collection was created as a result of the gathering of images and materials for the publucation of the book in 1990.
Processing Information
Photographs were organized and housed in archival boxes shortly after the publication of the book in 1990. The photographs were digitized in 2015, and a finding aid was created in 2025.
