Historical or Biographical Note

Dr. William Andrew Demonbreun (1899-1968) was a researcher, author, pathologist and Vanderbilt professor. Dr. Demonbreun is best known for his research on histoplasmosis in the 1930s and 1940s. "Gymnoascus demonbreunii" (a histoplasmotic fungus) is named for him (1967).

Dr. Demonbreun was born in College Grove, TN on July 12, 1899. H received his BA, MS, and MD degrees from Vanderbilt University, receving his medical degree from School of Medicine in 1927. After graduating from medical school he worked as a United States Navy Medical Officer from 1927-1929. Then he returned to Vanderbilt and worked as a resident in pathology from 1929-1930. In 1930 he joined the faculty at Vanderbilt and worked as a professor of clinical pathology until 1965. He died in Nashville December 11, 1968.
