Historical or Biographical Note
John Browe (1915-2008) was a doctor, researcher, and administrator in public health and nutrition. He worked primarily for the Vermont Bureau of Nutrition, but Dr. Browe also was a consultant to the federal government and conducted research studies around the globe.
Dr. Browe was born in Burlington, VT on Nov. 17, 1915. He obtained his M.D. from the University of Vermont, in 1940. During World War II he was a first lieutenant in the Army assigned to a hospital on Bataan. He was taken prisoner of war in April 1942, and he was liberated in September 1945. After the war, he was a research associate and clinical director of a nutrition study at the University of Vermont College of Medicine from 1946-1949. During this time period he also served as a consultant to the Vermont State Department of Health from 1948-1949. He received his M.P.H. from Columbia University in 1950.
Dr. Browe became the Acting Director and Director of the Vermont Bureau of Nutrition from 1950-1977. He also served as a consultant to the U.S. Public Health Service (1947, 1950-1973) and as a member of the Panel on Nutrition of the Life Sciences Committee for the Space Science Board, N.A.S. (1962-1970). Dr. Browe's research also included surveys in Chile, Venezuela, India, Iran, Middle East, Korea, and Turkey.
Dr. Browe was president of the Association of State and Territorial Public Health Nutrition Directors from 1957-1958. He was a fellow with the American Public Health Association, and he was a member of the American Board Nutrition, the American Institute of Nutrition, the American Society of Clinical Nutrition, and the Latin American Society of Nutrition. He also was a member of the Council of Epidemiology of the American Heart Association from 1966-1977.
