The resource consists of a variety of personal papers and memorabilia from both William Gardner Rhea Sr. and Jr including patient cards, ledger book contaning a surgery log 1966-1988, medical notes, issues of the Vanderbilt student magazine "The Chase" from the 1950s, and surgical caps.

Biographical / Historical

William Gardner Rhea, Jr. was born December 24, 1933 to Marian Travis Green and William Gardner Rhea, Sr., M.D., who delivered him at Nobles Memorial Hospital in Paris, TN. He received both his undergraduate degree and M.D. degree from Vanderbilt, receiving the latter in 1958. A general surgeon, Dr. Rhea served as Director of the Surgical Residency Training Program at Greenville Hospital System from 1978 - 1990. He died at his home in Easley, SC on November 24, 2016, the result of pulmonary fibrosis.

His father, William Gardner Rhea, Sr. also graduated from Vanderbilt School of Medicine, receiving his M.D. in 1926. Following post graduate training in New York, he practiced surgery in Paris, TN for his entire career, and was appointed the Chief of Staff of the Henry County General Hospital in 1953. He died in Paris October 22, 1988.
