Biographical / Historical

James Walsh McClaran was born in Jackson, TN on October 9, 1888 the son of Robert S. and Annette Walsh McClaran. He received his MD from the Medical Department of Vanderbilt University in 1911. In 1914 he volunteered for service as a surgeon in the French Army and served in that capacity with distinction until the entrance of the United States into the war. He then transferred to the U.S. Army. Following the war, he returned to Jackson, where he has a successful medical practice. He died suddenly on December 27, 1945.

The scrapbook contains numerous photographs of soldiers, patients, and hospitals, The album alos includes correspondence from Dr. McClaran to his family in Jackson, Tennessee.

Condition Description

The scrapbook is in poor condition, and is in danger of falling apart. The photos and papers are backed on acidic paper. Full conservation is likely necessary in the future.
