Biographical / Historical
Vinayak Narayan Patwardhan was born January 10, 1905 in Banaras, India. He received his PhD from the University of London, in 1934. He was appointed Professor of Nutrition at Vanderbilt University in 1966. Prior to his time at Vanderbilt, he served ass Head of Nutrition Department, US Naval Medical Research Unit 3; Chief of Nutrition, World Health Organization, Geneva; and Director, Nutritional Research Laboratories, Coonoor and Hyderabad from 1946 to 60. Dr. Patwardhan was an acknowledged nutrition expert in India. He investigated the influence of vitamin D on the metabolism of calcium and phosphorus; the nutritive value of vegetable proteins; protein utilization and requirements; and protein malnutrition. He elucidated the role of essential fatty acids in the etiology of phrynoderma. During his tenure at WHO, he participated in worldwide studies on iron deficiency, nutritional anemias and avitaminosis A. In 1952 he authored the book Nutrition in India which remains highly regarded to this day. Professor Patwardhan was elected to the Indian National Science Academy in 1958 and Honorary Member of the American Institute of Nutrition. He died July 8, 1971 in Cairo, Egypt (UAE).
