Biographical / Historical
Sidney Harshman, well-known microbiologist, served as Professor of Microbiology at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. He was considered the leading expert on staphylococcal alpha toxins. A native of Ohio, Dr. Harshman earned his B.S. in Biology and Chemistry from Western Reserve University in 1950 and his Sc.D. in Biochemistry from Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Health in 1959. He joined the faculty at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 1959 as Instructor in the Department of Microbiology and rose to the rank of Professor in 1978. Harshman was Associate Dean of the Graduate School from 1976 to 1981, and he was elevated to Professor Emeritus in 1996. Harshman died in Nashville, December 25, 1998. He was 67.

Abstract
Papers and materials beloging to Dr. Sidney Harshman documenting his research and teaching activities. Dr. Harshman served in the Department of Microbiology at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine. from his appointment as instructor in 1959 until his retirement as Professor in 1996.
Collection includes a small grouping of correspondence from 1961 labeled the” The Mucoid Business.” These letters include correspondence between Dr. Harshman and virologists Dr. Winston Price and Dr. Roger M. Herriott of Johns Hopkins School of Hygiene and Public Heath, and biochemist Dr. Richard J. Winzler of the University of Illinois College of Medicine. The correspondence relates to sero-mucoid research that Drs. Harshman and Price were undertaking at the time, and a disagreement that arose between them regarding the methodology.
