Biographical / Historical
Joel G. Hardman, internationally known scientist and educator, served as Chair of the Department of Pharmacology at Vanderbilt University School of Medicine from 1975-1990, establishing the department among the leading research and training in programs in pharmacology. This success can be attributed in part to Dr. Hardman’s personal involvement in the mentoring of each graduate student.
Born in Colbert Georgia in 1933, Dr. Hardman graduated from the University of Georgia in 1954 and earned his Ph.D. in Pharmacology from Emory University in 1964. Shortly after, he came to Vanderbilt to as a postdoctoral fellow in Earl Sutherland's lab, assisting him on his work on cyclic AMP. Dr. Hardman went on to discover guanylate cyclase, the enzyme responsible for synthesizing cyclic GMP from GTP.
In addition to serving as Chair of Pharmacology, Dr. Hardman also served as Associate Vice-Chancellor for Health Affairs from 1990 until his retirement in 1997. In 1992, Dr. Hardman became Co-Editor-In-Chief of Goodman and Gilman’s “The Pharmacological Basis of Therapeutics." He was active in numerous professional organizations and served as President of the American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics from 1993 to 1994.
He died June 30, 2019 in Hoosick Falls, New York after an extended illness.
