Historical or Biographical Note
Alice Drew Chenoweth (1903-1998) was a pediatrician and public health professional. Dr. Chenoweth was born in Albany, MO in 1903. In 1924 she graduated from Northwestern University with a BS in chemistry. She stayed at Northwestern to complete a master's degree in history in 1926, and then she taught at a Huntington College in Montgomery, AL from 1926-1928. She obtained her MD from Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 1932. After graduating, Dr. Chenoweth interned at Strong Memorial Hospital in Rochester, NY (1932-1933) and completed additional training at Johns Hopkins (1933-1934). Dr. Chenoweth then became the Assistant Chief Resident at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia from 1934-1936, and later she was a research fellow for the Philadelphia Pediatrics Society at the University of Pennsylvania School of Medicine from 1936-1937. Dr. Chenoweth then went into private practice in Rosemont, PA from 1938-1942.
During World War II, Dr. Chenoweth joined the State Department of Health of Kentucky as Director of Maternal and Child Health, a position she held from 1942-1949. She then went on to serve as Chief of the Children's Bureau/Maternal and Child Health Services for the U.S. Department of Health, Education and Welfare from 1949-1968. After a career with the government she worked as an associate editor for the "Journal of School Health" from 1969-73, and she was president of the American Medical Women's Association in 1968.
Dr. Chenoweth received many awards during her career, including the Superior Service Award from the Children's Bureau in 1967 and the Elizabeth Blackwell Medal from the American Medical Women's Association in 1973. She also established a scholarship for medical students at her alma mater, Vanderbilt University.
