Historical or Biographical Note

Dr. Elliot Voss Newman (1914-1973) was a cardiologist, researcher, and professor. He was a pioneer in the development of medical engineering and the use of applied mathematics and computer sciences for clinical problems. He received his M.D. from Harvard Medical School in 1939. He then interned at Newton Hospital and Massachusetts General Hospital from 1939-1941. He then was a Fellow at Johns Hopkins Hospital from 1941-1942. Then he went from Instructor to Associate Professor of Medicine at Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine during the years 1942-1952. Then he became the Joe and Morris Werthan Professor of Experimental Medicine, Head of Clinical Physiology Laboratories and Director for Clinical Research Center at the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and Hospital from 1952- 1973.
