Historical or Biographical Note
Paul Dudley Lamson (1884-1962) was a professor and researcher in pharmacology. Dr. Lamson's contributions include the introduction of hexylresorcinol and tetra-chloride for treatment of hookworm disease and ascariasis, and research in polycythemia, anthelmintics, anesthesia and shock.
Dr. Lamson received his A.B. (1905) and M.D. (1909) from Harvard. Then he worked as a House Officer at the Massachusetts General Hospital from 1909-1910. He was a Sheldon Traveling Fellow from 1911-1913, and served as a lecture assistant under Dr. Ernest Carroll Faust at the University of Wurzburg in Germany from 1912-1913. Dr. Lamson then worked as an Assistant Resident at the Peter Bent Brigham Hospital from 1913-1914. Then Dr. Lamson went to Johns Hopkins where he served as an Assistant in Experimental Therapeutics (1914-1915), an Associate in Pharmacology (1916-1920), and an Associate Professor of Pharmacology (1920-1925). He then came to the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine and was Professor and Chairman of the Department of Pharmacology (1925-1952) and Professor Emeritus (1952-1962).
Dr. Lamson also served as Editor-in Chief of the Journal of Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics from 1937-1940. He was also a member of the following organizations: American Association for the Advancement of Science (Vice President 1943), American Society for Pharmacology and Experimental Therapeutics, American Medical Association, American Physiological Society, Association of American Physicians, and American Chemical Society.

Personal papers of Paul Dudley Lamson, pharmacologist and Vanderbilt professor from 1916-1962. Dr. Lamson is known for his research in the fields of heart rhythms, liver function, acute polycythemia, blood volume, carbon tetrachloride poisoning, antihelminthics, shock, hook worm disease, and ascariasis. Dr. Lamson was chair of the Department of Pharmacology from 1925--1952. Materials include: reprints, lecture materials, course outlines, class photos, speeches, manuscripts, and lab data.
