Historical or Biographical Note

Dr. Philip Wyatt Felts (1931-1992) was an endocrinologist, teacher, researcher, and administrator in medicine. He is noted for research and advancement of education in diabetes, and he received numerous teaching awards.

Dr. Felts received his MD from the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine in 1956. He was the founder and director of Diabetes Center at Vanderbilt in 1962. He developed the national guidelines for diabetes research and training centers in 1975. Dr. Felts served as Assistant Dean of Student Affairs at the Vanderbilt School of Medicine from 1975-1988. Then he became Director of the Vanderbilt University School of Medicine Alumni Services from 1988-1992.
