Historical or Biographical Note

Dr. Robert D. Collins is a pathologist, teacher, and author. His research interests include diseases of the lymph nodes and bone marrow and the specialty of hematopathology. He is the author of a biography of Ernest W. Goodpasture published by Hillsboro Press, 2002, and a second book on the History of VUMC, entitled Ahmic Lake Connections.

Dr. Collins obtained his B.S. (1948) and his M.D. (1951) from Vanderbilt. Then he received a fellowship in microbiology at Johns Hopkins School of Medicine. Dr. Collins returned to Vanderbilt as assistant professor of pathology in 1959 and was promoted to professor in 1968. He also served as Assistant Dean of Medical Students from 1964-1967. He is a recipient of the Harvie Branscomb Distinguished Professor Award and the Grant Liddle Award for Excellence in Research.

Abstract

Manuscript and research materials gathered by Dr. Robert D. Collins for his book on Ernest W. Goodpasture and his book entitled, Ahmic Lake Connections; the Founding Leadership of Vanderbilt University, which explores the friendship between Abraham Flexner, James Kirkland, and Canby Robinson. Included are copies of original correspondence from the James Kirkland Papers. Materials related to his editing of the memoirs of Dr. Roscoe R. Robinson, and the biography of Dr. Amos Christie written by Dr. Robert Merrill are included in this collection. Copies of publications by Dr. Collins, as well as unpublished papers and various correspondence and subject files make up the final two series of this collection.
