Historical or Biographical Note
Amos Christie (1902-1986) was a pediatrician, child health advocate, professor, and administrator at Vanderbilt University Medical School. Dr. Christie is best known for his research in histoplasmosis, known as the "Vanderbilt disease," but he also conducted research in reticuloendotheliosis, immunization, and physical defects of children. He was also instrumental in integrating Vanderbilt's pediatrics ward in the late 1940s.
Dr. Christie was born in Eureka, CA in 1902. He earned a B.S. degree from the University of Washington and an M.D. from the University of California, San Francisco in 1929. He was an Instructor in Pediatrics at the University of California from 1930-1935. Then he became a Pediatrician, Obstetrician, and Research Fellow at Johns Hopkins from 1936-1937. Dr. Christie then started as an Assistant Professor and eventually became an Associate Professor of Pediatrics at the University of California School of Medicine from 1937-1942. He then worked for the American Red Cross as an Assistant Director of Medical and Health Services from 1942-1943. In 1943, he came to Vanderbilt as chair of the Department of Pediatrics, a position he held until his retirement in 1968.

Most of the collection relates to Dr. Christie's work at Vanderbilt and also his work with various civic organizations, government agencies, and other area health care providers. Personal information can be found in diaries from 1963, 1966, 1968, and 1975. Collection also contains information about the Dr. Christie's family history and genealogies.
Correspondence in this collection is primarily from 1938-1968 with some older letters also included. Correspondence is arranged in several ways: alphabetically, by subject, and chronologically.
