VU Goes to War Rudolph H. Kampmeier, 1941 - 1945

Details of Rudolph Kampmeier's tenure in the Department of Medicine during the Second World War Several articles about and by Dr. Kampmeier; Dr. Kampmeier made repeated efforts from 1943-45 to become a comissioned officer in either Navy/Army; he wrote of his ability to read and write German fluently and of his knowledge about sexually acquired infections as justification for his being in the military (the basic reason he wanted to join was to prove "good Germans"). The following letters were in his file, were in the Kampmeier Papers, many in Box 53: letters to the School of Military Government and Naval Department; letters to the U.S. Public Health Service; letters to the Health Division of UNRRA; to the Rockfeller; to the Veterans' Administration; to the Surgeon General's Office; to POW camps; to War Man-Power Comission; and to the Department of State Office of Foreign Relief Letters to Dr. Lampson of the Procurement and Assignment Service, Dr. Harrison Shoulders, Dr. Dickson, all in relationship to his essential status; several to Dr. Leathers with replies, dating from 1942-3. Dr. Leathers essentially refused to remove Dr. Kampmeier from the essential teaching list; Letters from Dr. Kampmier to Louis Moore, Commander of Post 5, to the Provost General's Office, extensive correspondence with John Youmans, before and after the Youmans resignation with Dr. Finnley in New Orleans; there is a request for authorization for Kampmier to travel as a civilian.
