AFIP Fascicle, 1975 - 1994

This turned out to be a seventeen year project!!! The extraordinary delays were due in part to the complexity of the subject, in part to political issues in relationship to the classification of lymphomas, in part to the problems inherent in a trans-continental collaboration, and mainly to problems one or both authors had inactually putting pen to paper. The relevant documents relating to this project are enclosed. Bear in mind that at the time the most authoritative description of tumors of all types was in AFIP fascicles. For the record, RDC was on Sabbatical in Jan-July 1985, Lukes on Sabbatical in London July 1985 for several months; Dr. Hartmann to RDC Aug 11, 1975 inviting me to prepare Fascicle on Tumors of the Hematopoetic System; RDC to WHH on Jan 15, 1975 accepting for Lukes and Collins, with Jan 1978 as deadline; RDC to WHH on Jan 19, 1976 with progress report and contemplated outline; WHH to RDC April 1, 1976 delaying publication (probably due to resistance from Berard, Dorfman, National Cancer Institute, Lauren Ackerman at St. Louis); notice of RFP on classification of lymphomas from Dec 1975 as indicator of turmoil on this issue; RDC to WHH on April 21, 1976 stating our goals and objectivity in discussing classifications; Berard to Lukes Sept 23, 1976 about proposed study of classifications; WHH to RDC March 31, 1977 requesting progress report--there had been no written communications stating we should proceed; repeat WHH to RDC about progress Oct 4, 1977--no reply from RDC in files; WHH to RDC June 26, 1979 with expectation of answer with response July 23, 1979 with note Lukes and I were to spend two weeks in Oct "to make arrangements to complete" Fascicle; WHH to RDC in Oct 1, 1982 asking for date of completion; RDC to Lukes Oct 18 about date of completion with promise on that date to WHH that we would give date Nov 1; RDC to WHH Dec 9, 1982 giving deadline of Dec 31, 1983; WHH to RDC Jan 4, 1983 stating that second series would wrap up in 1986, and that manuscripts had to be in by Dec 31, 1983; RDC to Lukes Jan 12, 1983 stating that we had fixed deadline, with one year to produce!!; RDC to WHH Jan 12 promising manuscript; RDC to Brunning March 17, 1983 asking if he and McKenna would do leukemia section; Brunning to RDC on May 2 indicating willingness and enthusiasm; RDC to Brunning June 9 and 10, 1983 in response to points in May 2 letter; WHH to RDC Oct 5, 1983 reminding delinquent authors about Dec deadline (I do not know how many other delinquents there were); RDC to WHH Oct 10 promising manuscript; Lukes to RDC on Nov 21 with alarming projections about deadline; Lukes to RDC Dec 28, 1983 with "last batch of photos" for Fascicle; RDC and Lukes to WHH Dec 30, 1983 with letter transmitting Fascicle; WHH to RDC Jan 24 acknowledging receipt; RDC to Lukes Feb 15, 1984 requesting names of reviewers; WHH to RDC a year later March 6, 1985 with copies of reviews; RDC to WHH on July 23, 1985 with responses to reviews; WHH to RDC Nov 16 1987 giving Dec deadline with promise by RDC on Nov 18 of December delivery; RDC and Lukes to WHH on Dec 21 as cover letter for Fascicle--actually turned in and photographed on Jan 31; RDC to Lukes April 1 about acceptance and Cotran April 1 with thanks; RDC to Beverly Lea (copy editor at UAREP) on July 15, her responses and communications on Feb 26, Aug 5, and Aug 29; latter confirmed Fascicle at printer!!
