Biographical / Historical
Joseph Rhea Anderson (1819-1888) was born on 25 October 1819 in Scott County, Virginia. He was the founder of Bristol Tennessee and Virginia. Anderson erected the first building in Bristol and became its first postmaster, merchant, and banker. For many years he was a director of the East Tennessee Railroad and was nominated for Governor of Tennessee the day before his death. Anderson died from typhoid fever in Bristol, Tennessee on 18 May 1888.
