Nettie Hale Rand Collection
Scope and Contents
The Nettie Hale Rand Collection includes bindings by George Bayntun, Robert Rivière, and Francis Sangorski and printings by private presses of the 19th and 20th centuries, including Kelmscott, Doves, Chiswick, and Gregynog. This collection also includes a typed diary of Nettie Hale Rand's travels in Europe in 1934.

The physical materials from this collection may be viewed only in the reading room of Vanderbilt’s Special Collections and University Archives. Biographical / Historical
Nettie Hale Rand (1881-1942), daughter of Margaret Miriam Strong and Phillip Henry Hale, was born on 27 January 1881 in Jacksboro, Texas. She received her BA from Vanderbilt University and married Frank Chambless Rand (1876-1949), son of Ada Elizabeth Norfleet and Henry Oscar Rand, in 1904. The couple went on to have six children. Frank served as the vice-president of the International Shoe Company from 1907-1915, its president from 1916-1930, and its chairman from 1930-1949. He served on the boards of several companies, including banks and railways, and was an active philanthropist. He was a member of the Vanderbilt University Board of Trust from 1912 to 1949 and was the board's president from 1935 to 1949. Nettie loved literature and befriended several famous authors, often hosting them in her home in St. Louis, Missouri. She died in St. Louis on 26 November 1942.

Abstract
The Nettie Hale Rand Collection, 1480-1941, consists of early printings and rare editions collected by philanthropist Nettie Hale Rand, 1881-1942, and the diary she kept while traveling in Europe in the 1934.
