Le Sony'r Ra (born Herman Poole Blount, May 22, 1914 – May 30, 1993), better known as Sun Ra, was a groundbreaking American jazz composer, bandleader, pianist, synthesizer player, and poet. Renowned for his experimental music, "cosmic" philosophy, prolific output, and theatrical performances, Sun Ra became a pioneer of Afrofuturism.

Born and raised in Alabama, Blount immersed himself in the Chicago jazz scene during the late 1940s. He soon abandoned his birth name, adopting the moniker Le Sony'r Ra, which he later shortened to Sun Ra, drawing inspiration from Ra, the Egyptian god of the Sun. Claiming to be an alien from Saturn on a mission to preach peace, Sun Ra developed a mythical persona and an idiosyncratic philosophy, consistently denying ties to his prior identity.

Throughout his career, Sun Ra led The Arkestra, an ever-evolving ensemble featuring artists such as Marshall Allen, John Gilmore, and June Tyson. The group was known for their eclectic and avant-garde music, spanning the entire history of jazz from ragtime and swing to bebop, free jazz, and fusion. Their performances were marked by elaborate, futuristic costumes inspired by ancient Egyptian attire and the Space Age.

In the mid-1950s, Sun Ra and his business partner, Alton Abraham, founded the independent record label El Saturn Records, releasing numerous singles and albums. Among these early works were "Super-Sonic Jazz" (1957) and "Jazz in Silhouette" (1959). Sun Ra also became one of the first musicians to use electronic keyboards and synthesizers, cementing his place as an innovator in jazz.

Sun Ra's Arkestra was more than a band; it was a holistic artistic project that blended music, theater, dance, and philosophy. The ensemble's members often lived and worked together, embodying Sun Ra's vision of a utopian community devoted to music. Despite facing limited mainstream success, Sun Ra's influence persisted, and The Sun Ra Arkestra continues to perform today under the leadership of Marshall Allen.

Sun Ra's legacy is characterized by his vast discography, which includes over 100 full-length albums and more than 1,000 songs. His work in free improvisation, modal jazz, and the early adoption of electronic instruments has left an indelible mark on the world of music, making him one of the most prolific and influential artists of the 20th century.
